Decision framework
Lease or buy business equipment?
Compare equipment ownership and leasing using the intended period of use, full costs, return obligations, and independent advice.
Compare leasing and purchasing using the same equipment, use period and service scope. Include upfront amounts, fees, taxes and the intended return or ownership outcome. Tax and accounting treatment need a separate review.
Use the same project assumptions
Compare the same equipment, delivery scope, period of use, and service requirements. A purchase funded from cash, a purchase financed through borrowing, and a use-oriented lease can result in different ownership and end-of-term positions.
Compare full obligations
Include upfront payments, scheduled payments, fees, taxes, maintenance, insurance, and the planned end-of-term action. If a comparison assumes a resale value or purchase option price, label it as an assumption unless contractually fixed. Avoid comparing only a monthly payment with an equipment purchase price.
Separate the financial and operational decisions
Your intended refresh cycle, ability to maintain aging equipment, and cost of removing it matter alongside cash flow. Tax and accounting treatment require review of the proposed agreement and your circumstances.
- How long will the equipment remain useful to you?
- Is ownership an objective or simply one possible outcome?
- What happens if the project changes early?
- Which end-of-term costs are uncertain?
Compare the intended end position
These are discussion points, not a statement that a provider offers every structure or that a product label settles tax or accounting treatment.
| Starting point | Ownership question | Cost to clarify | Operational question |
|---|---|---|---|
| FMV lease | Which return, renewal or purchase options exist? | How would a future market-value purchase price be established? | What notice, condition and shipping rules apply on return? |
| Purchase-option arrangement | Is purchase optional or required, and when does title transfer? | What buyout, fees and taxes are additional? | What obligations continue before ownership transfers? |
| Equipment finance agreement | Who holds title and what security interests are involved? | What does early payoff require? | Who maintains, insures and manages the equipment? |
| Cash purchase | What title and warranty rights does the supplier provide? | What cash is required including installation and taxes? | Who manages later disposal and any resale uncertainty? |
