Prepare financing for CMMs, inspection instruments and test benches, with calibration, measurement requirements and software clearly specified.
Metrology equipment financing starts with the measurement task, not just the instrument price. Identify the required capability, operating environment, calibration services and software rights before comparing acquisition structures for the instrument and its supporting equipment.

A coordinate measuring machine, optical inspection system, spectrometer and electrical test bench serve different tasks. Describe the parts or materials, measurement range, throughput and required performance. Ask the technical team to explain what the proposed equipment must demonstrate at acceptance.
List probes, fixtures, reference artifacts, computers and software separately. An instrument suitable for a supplier demonstration may need additional preparation to work reliably in the buyer’s laboratory or on its production floor.
Include installation, environmental preparation, vibration isolation where relevant, training and initial calibration as separate quote lines. Recurring calibration, reference materials and software maintenance need their own operating budget. Ask which initial costs the financing provider can consider.
NIST describes metrological traceability in terms of a measurement result and its documented chain of calibrations. Owning an instrument described as traceable does not by itself demonstrate that every result produced by the user meets a customer’s requirements. Keep measurement assurance with the technical quality team.
Request model, serial number, condition, service records and included accessories. Verify the availability of spare parts, vendor support and a suitable calibration service. Software access or a service contract may not transfer automatically to the next owner.
Compare the cost of moving, recommissioning and qualifying a used instrument with purchasing another configuration. A lower purchase price may be outweighed by missing probes, unsupported software or the cost of creating an appropriate operating environment.
Long-term retention may make documented purchase terms important; a changing test program may make replacement flexibility more relevant. Neither an FMV label nor a purchase option establishes a guaranteed secondary-market value. Examine the actual return, renewal and ownership provisions.
The financing inquiry should name the applicant, site state, USD budget and target acceptance date. A useful attachment is a technical scope that distinguishes the instrument, its accessories and the services needed before productive use. Keep proprietary test data out of an initial inquiry.
Only if calibration is included in the supplier’s documented scope. Confirm the certificate, measurement range and service responsibility separately from financing.
Itemize them and describe license restrictions. The provider reviews the complete project rather than assuming every supporting cost is eligible.
No general age rule establishes suitability. Condition, support, software, relocation costs and the intended measurement task all require review.
