A commercial EV project combines vehicles, charging, utility capacity and operating schedules. Before comparing financing proposals, check whether the fleet can complete its routes and recharge within the available dwell time.

Start with duty cycles
The Department of Energy’s fleet guidance emphasizes operational readiness. Map daily mileage, payload, weather exposure and time parked at the depot. A vehicle’s advertised range is only one input; the operating plan must accommodate actual routes and the time available to charge.
Separate the vehicle and infrastructure budgets
Identify vehicle costs, chargers, electrical upgrades, installation, network services and maintenance. Different ownership and financing arrangements may apply to these components. Confirm which organization controls the site and who pays for upgrades that remain with the property.
Evaluate total cost with documented assumptions
Compare energy, maintenance, downtime and infrastructure costs over a stated period. Verify any incentive separately against current eligibility and timing; do not make a grant or tax benefit a condition for affordability unless it is supported. Ask how early replacement or a change in operating site would affect the agreement.
